The Williamson Museum is a place where students can study Native American art and culture. Although it does not budget to purchase these collections, it is able to access many of the items in its collections through the generosity of American Indian collectors. For example, during the 1930s, Caroline Dormon and Mrs. King Rand collected baskets from the Chitimacha and Koasati tribes. Since then, the collections have continued to grow. See this website

Construction of the building began in mid-1910 and cost nearly doubled from the original $9200 estimate. The original nine-inch-thick building has since been remodeled twice and has a false ceiling extension on the front of the building. While the new facade has modern conveniences and features, the original architecture remains. The Williamson Museum is home to an impressive array of art and history collections. It is also a place for the community to meet new friends.

Another cultural institution in Memphis is the Museum of Contemporary Art. This museum is situated downtown and is open Wednesday through Saturday, from noon to 5 pm. The museum is free to visit.
